EMDR Therapy

EMDR Therapy in Fallbrook, CA

Medically reviewed by Veronica Anderson, Clinical/Medical Director · Last reviewed September 2026

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, trauma-focused psychotherapy that helps the brain reprocess a distressing memory so it stops firing with the same intensity. At RYSE Wellness, EMDR is delivered inside a 6-bed residential program in Fallbrook, California, alongside FDA-cleared qEEG brain mapping performed three times during your stay.

That matters for one reason. Trauma work is easier to pace and safer to deliver when your clinical team can see what your nervous system is actually doing, and when you are not driving home alone afterward.

Key Takeaways

What EMDR Therapy Does

A traumatic memory can stay stored in a raw, unprocessed form. Years later, a sound or a smell or a conversation can pull it back with the original charge attached.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, alternating left-right sensory input, while you hold a specific memory in mind. The goal is not to erase the memory. The goal is to let your brain finish the processing it did not get to complete, so the memory becomes something you remember rather than something you relive.

EMDR is one of the trauma-focused psychotherapies named in clinical practice guidelines for post-traumatic stress disorder, including those published by the American Psychiatric Association and the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense. Individual response varies, and your clinician will tell you honestly whether EMDR is the right starting point for you.

What EMDR is Used to Address

Clinicians use EMDR to target trauma-related symptoms and the memories driving them. At RYSE Wellness it is most often used with adults presenting with:

Post-traumatic stress disorder

This includes intrusive memories, nightmares, and hypervigilance

Single-incident trauma

Such as an assault, an accident, or a medical event

Complex or developmental trauma

Usually stemming and carried from childhood

Trauma underneath depression or anxiety

Which has not responded to previous treatment

EMDR is not appropriate for everyone, and not appropriate for everyone right away. Before any reprocessing begins, your clinician screens for medical stability, dissociation, and current safety. If those screens say wait, you stabilize first and the trauma work starts when it can be done safely.

RYSE Wellness treats adults only. Mental health is always the primary focus of care here, including for adults who also live with substance use.

How a Course of EMDR is Structured

EMDR follows a standardized eight-phase protocol. The phases are not eight appointments. Most of them recur across sessions as your clinician works through more than one memory target.

  1. History and treatment planning. Your clinician reviews your trauma history, current symptoms, medical stability, and safety, then identifies which memories to target and in what order.
  2. Preparation. You learn grounding, paced breathing, and distress-tolerance skills before any reprocessing starts. This phase is where readiness is built, and it is not rushed.
  3. Assessment. You and your clinician name the target memory, the negative belief attached to it, and the belief you would rather hold, then take a baseline distress rating.
  4. Desensitization. You hold the memory in mind during short sets of bilateral stimulation, pausing between sets to report what came up. Distress ratings are re-taken throughout so pacing stays under control.
  5. Installation. Once distress has come down, the session shifts to strengthening the adaptive belief you identified in phase three.
  6. Body scan. You check for residual physical tension tied to the memory. Leftover tension usually means there is more to process.
  7. Closure. Every session ends stabilized, whether or not the target is finished. You leave with grounding skills, not an open wound.
  8. Re-evaluation. At the next session your clinician re-measures the target and decides what comes next.

Sessions are paced by your clinician based on how you are responding, not by a fixed schedule. Short-term reactions such as fatigue, vivid recall, or strong emotion between sessions are common, which is one of the practical arguments for doing this work in a residential setting with clinical staff on site around the clock.

How EMDR Fits the Rest of Your Treatment Plan

EMDR is one piece of a plan, not the whole plan. At RYSE Wellness it sits on a clinical spine of psychiatry, medication management, and evidence-based therapy, with brain data informing how the pieces are sequenced.

qEEG Brain Mapping

FDA-cleared quantitative EEG via Firefly Neuro, performed three times during your stay at intake, midway, and discharge, so you can see your own brain data change rather than take our word for it.

In-House TMS

Transcranial magnetic stimulation delivered on site and coordinated with psychotherapy when neuromodulation is clinically indicated. No outside referral required.

AI-Supported Treatment Planning

Informs how your clinical team prioritizes memory targets and paces sessions. It supports clinical decisions; it does not make a diagnosis.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Builds the thought-level skills that hold between trauma sessions, so progress made in EMDR has something to land on.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Builds the emotion regulation and distress tolerance that make deeper trauma work safer to attempt.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Supports values-based action while difficult material is still surfacing, rather than waiting for symptoms to clear first.

Psychiatric Care

Psychiatric evaluation and medication management running throughout your stay, coordinated with the pacing of trauma work.

Individual, Group, and Family Therapy

Individual sessions anchor the clinical work, groups build practice, and family sessions shape the plan you go home to.

Holistic Supports

Yoga, meditation, art, equine therapy, and nutrition, which complement the clinical spine of psychiatry and evidence-based therapy rather than substitute for it.

What to Expect

Stage

What happens

  1. First contact

Call admissions or submit the insurance form. A coordinator listens first, answers questions, and explains what residential care at RYSE Wellness involves.

2. Benefits verification

A free, confidential VOB, often the same day, so you know your expected out-of-pocket cost before you commit to anything.

3. Clinical assessment

A clinician reviews psychiatric history, medical stability, trauma history, medications, and goals.

4. Treatment plan

Built from that assessment plus your intake qEEG. It names which modalities you start with and in what order.

5. Treatment begins

Trauma work starts when the readiness phase says it is safe to start, not on a fixed day.

6. Midway qEEG

A second brain map shows what has shifted and gives your team a reason to adjust the plan, or a reason not to.

7. Discharge and aftercare

A third qEEG at discharge, plus an aftercare plan built with you and, when you want them there, your family.

Insurance and Payment

RYSE Wellness is PPO out-of-network friendly and accepts private pay.

We run a free, confidential, no-obligation verification of benefits, often the same day you ask. It gives you an estimate of what your plan is likely to cover and what your own cost would be, before you make a decision. A VOB is an estimate and commits you to nothing.

Step What it gives you What we need from you
Verification of benefits An estimate of coverage and expected out-of-pocket cost Insurer name, member ID, date of birth
Clinical consultation A clinician's read on whether residential care fits Current symptoms, treatment history, medications
Admission planning Dates, logistics, what to bring Preferred admission window

Plans we can check benefits for include Cigna, Aetna, Carelon, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, UMR, Meritain, Halcyon, Tufts, GEHA, Multiplan, and Medica. Cash and other payment options are also available.

Why Choose RYSE Wellness

Brain data at three points, not one

FDA-cleared qEEG through Firefly Neuro at intake, midway, and discharge means the plan gets checked against something objective partway through, not just at the end.

TMS without leaving the property

In-house delivery, evaluated by psychiatry, integrated with the rest of your plan instead of arranged through an outside referral.

True 6-bed residential setting

A census of six means the same clinicians see you every day, which changes how quickly a medication or therapy adjustment can happen.

Built for the second attempt

The program is designed around adults whose first round of treatment did not hold, so skepticism about trying another program is treated as reasonable.

Clinical leadership & transparency

Clinical/Medical Director Veronica Anderson leads a team that explains decisions in plain language and coordinates handoffs to outpatient providers in the community at discharge. RYSE Wellness is a California-licensed residential mental health facility with Joint Commission accreditation in progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does insurance cover EMDR?

Many PPO plans include coverage for psychotherapy delivered during residential mental health treatment, but the specifics vary by policy. We run a free, confidential verification of benefits so you get an estimate of your own coverage rather than a general answer.

How long is an EMDR session?

Session length is set by your clinician based on the target being processed and how you are responding. Early sessions are usually longer because they include assessment and readiness work.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on your trauma history, your current symptoms, and how the first targets go. Your clinician will give you a realistic picture after the assessment phase rather than a number on day one.

Is EMDR safe?

EMDR is delivered by trained clinicians and paced deliberately, with grounding and stabilization skills taught before any reprocessing begins. Processing can surface strong emotion, which is why every session ends stabilized and why doing this work in a residential setting gives you clinical support afterward.

Who is not a candidate for EMDR right now?

Anyone who is medically unstable, in acute crisis, or showing significant dissociation is stabilized first. EMDR is not withheld in those cases, it is sequenced, and your clinician will tell you what needs to happen before it starts.

Do you offer EMDR on an outpatient basis or by telehealth?

No. RYSE Wellness provides residential mental health treatment only. EMDR here is delivered on site as part of a residential stay.

Can I do EMDR if I also have a substance use issue?

Yes, provided mental health is the primary treatment need and you are medically stable. RYSE Wellness does not provide medical detox or withdrawal management, and we coordinate with the appropriate provider when that level of medical care is needed first.

What if trauma is not the only thing going on?

That is the norm here. EMDR is sequenced with psychiatry, medication management, CBT, DBT, ACT, and where indicated TMS, as one part of a single plan.
